How to Set Up a Successful Sleep Space

May 14, 2024

We all want to be able to fall asleep easily, and you can set yourself up for success by having a perfectly set up sleep space—in this case, a bedside table. Here are some suggestions to help get you started adapting your own space.

Soft Lighting

To help wind down, be sure to turn off harsh overhead lighting ahead of your bedtime. Turn to soft lighting sources, such as bedside table lamps with a lower wattage bulb or dimming capabilities.

Essential Oil Diffusor

Many people report soothing scents help with relax before bed. Although we are all familiar with lavender’s sleep promoting reputation, consider other calming scents such as cedar wood, ylang ylang, or if you are feeling stuffy eucalyptus may help. A good diffusor not only helps get the essential oils in the air, but looks nice while doing it. Here is a favorite of ours. These oils are bundled together and will give you a good starting point to find the right fragrance for you.

Books

Since screen time has been shown to delay our brains ability to fall asleep, consider trading in your endless screen scrolling for a book. My bedside stack includes The Woman in Cabin Ten, Layla, and The Spy and the Traitor at the moment. If reading isn’t you thing, consider writing a daily journal entry to help wind down; you can reflect on your day, create lists of things you are thankful for, or use the time to set goals for yourself.

Beverage

Alcohol has been shown to cause disruptions to the sleep cycle, so some good alternatives are bedtime tea blends and tart cherry juice based mocktails. Take a moment for some self care and have a nice relaxing bedtime drink.

Sound Machine

You either love or hate the idea of a sound machine, but if you love them, you should make sure you have a good one with a few different sounds to suit your mood. You can get one with all the bells and whistles, or a scaled down version with a similar look.

Sleep Mask

If you need absolute darkness, a sleep mask is the way to go. Soft and silky materials work best. This one is a nice option.

This list isn’t all encompassing, but it's a great start for you to work on your sleep space. As we find more helpful products and ideas, we will update our recommendations here!
